“They’re our brothers, they’re our sisters, we support the war resisters!” For the second year in a row, the RMO joined the War Resisters League in demonstrating on tax day, April 15. Marching from the IRS building on 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan to the General Post Office on 8th Avenue and 33rd Street, we played songs and chanted to draw attention to the flyers that the WRL handed to everyone as we passed. The flyers provided information and pie charts on where people’s money actually goes when they pay taxes, included the disparate amount that goes to funding war. Upon arrival at the Post Office, the RMO took turns playing music and singing songs with the Raging Grannies, a fierce group of anti-war songstresses with grandchildren.
On March 1st, 2009, RMO joined the celebration of diversity and the call of the bagpipes for the 10th annual St. Pat’s For All Parade and Fair in Sunnyside/Woodside. Despite overcast skies, the band’s energy and spirit helped get the crowds moving. We marched with community groups, unions, pipers, dancers and puppeteers, religious communities, youth groups, seniors, gay and straight, all celebrating our wonderful diversity. The honorees for the 2009 celebration were Belfast born director and screenwriter Terry George and singer Susan McKeown.
