DCTV Open House!

Thursday May 29th, Downtown Community Television (DCTV)- 87 Lafayette St. 2 blocks South of Canal St. between Walker and White. It’s an old firehouse.

Arrive BY 8:30 PM, we are playing at 9pm SHARP! you are quite welcome to come early and enjoy the open bar, see what open house things this media non-profit has to show off and generally get a feel for what’s going on here. It’s a great place.

What you’re playing for:

DCTV(megan’s fabulous workplace) is having one of it’s 2 or 3 times a year open houses. These are big events in which we open the door to the community we currently serve and those who don’t yet know to utilise us. What we do is provide low cost access for the creation of media. We teach workshops, rent equipment, have editing stations, host events, and basically are a vital resource for independant video makers in NY. Also we run a program that pays high school kids to come in and learn to make videos, we’re a non-profit And democracy now! shoots here daily.DCTV has asked the RMO to play it’s open house. We would have space for our gear, beer all around, and play a set from 9- 9:30PM. Things incidentally happen close to on-time around here. They’ve offered to pay us around $100 for the night but I have a better idea. The space we’d be playing in has a fairly large capacity and would be a great place to have our fundraiser. I’ve asked if we could have the space for free if we play the open house and it seems like a welcome partnership.

QEJ’s Amazingly Queer Race

The opening ceremony is from 10-11, at MetropolitanCommunity Church of New York, 446 West 36th Street. Our role would be to play for 20-30 minutes during this (probably starting around 10:40) in the sanctuary (ya, it’s a church, there’s a “stage”, and it’s a large room that can fit 100-200 people). There will be about 60 people attending. There is a room upstairs where they will have food (I didn’t ask about us eating, but I know we did last year), and Doyin said there is a smaller room connected to that one where we can store cases, etc and that they can have a volunteer keeping an eye on things while we play.Contact: Laura Read more

  Workers at this Kensington institution have reported working 72 hours a week for weekly wages ranging from $350 - $450, below the legal minimum wage, and without any benefits. Working conditions are often difficult: lack of proper working equipment, exposure to extreme temperatures, heavy lifting, poor sanitation.
  
  Workers are suing to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay and to win a contract that will guarantee them such basic benefits as paid vacation days, sick days, protection from arbitrary dismissal, a grievance procedure, and raises.
  
  As a result of worker legal action and intervention by the Department of Labor and NY Attorney General, the owner recently began paying workers minimum wage. However, the workers are owed back pay and need basic benefits. But most of all workers are organizing for RESPECT, DIGNITY and FAIR AND JUST WORKING CONDITIONS.
