Casa Del Sol
South Bronx
Several weeks prior to this “garden party” in the South Bronx, police raided the Casa del Sol squat, giving residents one hour to collect their belongings before forcefully ejecting people from their home and out onto to the winter streets. Less than four hours later, contractors hired by the low-income housing developer AHC started a fire in the building, rendering much of it uninhabitable. What started as a celebration of a nearby community garden quickly changed in nature, as the RMO led an angry crowd of former residents and supporters to the Casa del Sol building. The area had been staked out by cops, and a tense standoff ensued, highlighted by a march to surround the building and successful break-in and banner drop, and culminating in the police violently arresting a number of demonstrators.
